Here's a few....
Silly Mountain Rd. This was BLM land leased by Apache Junction with
hopes that they could use the land for a community college extension.
They found a better spot for the college and decided to use Silly Mtn as
part of the AJ park system. AJ purchased the land from the BLM prior to
closing the trail. A recent fire destroyed much of the vegetation on the
mountain, but the city council attributed the loss of vegetation to 4x4s
and other off-highway vehicles instead of natural causes. There are
homes being built on the north side of the mountain. The ASA4WDC
concurred that this trail was not worth fighting to keep open.
Coronado National Forest sky islands. Numerous roads have been closed or
will be closed in the southern Arizona 'sky islands' due to lawsuits
files by environmental groups such as the Southwest Center for
Biodiversity, Sierra Club, and the Nature Conservancy. Their chief
arguments are that animal species in the area need travel corridors in
order to migrate and/or mate. This is the same argument that is being
used for the pygmy owl in Pima County.
Grand Canyon National Monument. Toroweap Trail. This is the only 4x4
trail that follows the north edge of the Grand Canyon. Environmentalists
argued that allowing motorized vehicles on this trail took away from the
solitude of the canyon. The trail is long enough that you can't
hike/bicycle without caching water and food in advance and you can't do
that unless you have an easy way of doing it -- motorized vehicle?
Anyway the solitude of the Grand Canyon is destroyed every morning at
dawn by the small tour planes.
Tonto National Forest. The Bulldog Canyon Trail is under consideration
to be closed to motorized vehicles due to target shooters and people who
don't want to pay at the landfill to dump their household trash. Red
Creek Trail (FR18) is still under consideration for closure.
Gila Box Riparian Area. I think Keith Orr knows more about this. There
was a series of 4x4 trails in this area that were closed to maintain the
riparian habitat about 5-6 years ago.
A series of trails on the west side of the Tijanas Altas Mtns were
closed by the Military and Border Patrol a few years ago. This was to
hinder illegals from crossing the Mexican-US border in the area and also
to prevent 4x4s and other off-highway vehicles from damaging the land.
Most of the spur trails on the Camino del Diablo have been closed to the
public also.
How far back do you want to go?
Up until about 20 years ago or so there was a series of 4x4 trails on
the east side of South Mountain Park there were pretty much fair game.
You can still see remnants of the trails. There were also a series of
trails in the North Phoenix Mtns. Those linked mining claims in the
area. I remember going out on those when I was in high school.

Forgot to mention a series of trails in the Las Cruces, NM area. These
are hard rock trails. The SW4WDC says that these trails were old mining
roads that fall under RS2477, but I guess the BLM felt that that was not
the case. They have been closed for 2-3 years.

Time is very short and we need to know now, if you are in or out?
The drive on the capitol is scheduled for June 10th, a Saturday.
We need about 1000 plus vehicles if we are going make a statement that
everyone is going to listen to. Currently we only have a handful
participating.
What we need to know?
Do you want to keep lands open?
Will you be at this drive?
If you are attending how many others will you be bringing?
If this falls apart and only 10 are going to show, our opposition has
already won in the eyes of Joe Public.
Please respond to me ASAP so we know if we should continue to make this
happen.

when and where would we meet?

That reminds me, we really need to organize a clean up for Bulldog Canyon.
Unfortunately it's getting hot but I figure we could do a half day on the
trail & then jump in the river or lake. Let me know if anyone is up for it,
I'm open any weekend after June 3-4.

A boy scout troop recently cleaned up the target shooting area. I'll bet
that, by now, you probably can't even tell that they did any cleaning.
My biggest disappointment was going out there last year and noting that
the crested saquaro on the west leg of the trail had been poached.
When do you want to go out there? The extreme south and west entrances
are the worst.

Subject: RE: Names of trails or areas that have been closed?
It has 3 entrances, one is next to the Blue Point Bridge another is on Usery
Road and the other is on a back road in Apache Junction. The entrance has a
lock on it but the combination can be obtained by going to the Mesa ranger
station and getting a pass(it's free). I have seen the trail rated a 2.5 and
3, most of it is quite easy with a couple of rocks by the south end & a hill
near the north. I would think a stock vehicle wouldn't have much trouble
with it.
I'm open most weekends so let me know.

Subject: Usery Pass area
The Usery Pass area is pretty cool, but the shooting range is already filthy
again. I was there the day that it was cleaned up, and in two weeks time it
looked like a landfill again. I have tried to find the trailheads out
there, but have had no luck. What is the location of the Mesa ranger
station?

The Tonto NF Mesa Ranger District Office is on MacDonald just north of
Main St. in Mesa. It's the USDA building on the west side of the street.
Warning! They keep banker's hours so you might want to call first.

It's north of Main street on Center (I think). You may want to look in the
phone book to be sure. They will give you a map with the permit.

Subject: Wanted...
I have a 93 YJ and need to replace the section of the exhaust pipe
that bolts between the header and the muffler. This is the section
that crosses under the transmission from the driver's side to the
passenger's side. If anybody has one of these laying around after
installing a custom exhaust and wants to get rid of it, send me an
email.
Thanks,
Roger

Uh-oh, you're experiencing the exact same thing my friend just went thru
with his 4.5" Rusty XJ lift. His bushings lasted less than an hour off-road
the first time before disintegrating. He got replacements from
Rusty...which lasted all of 20 minutes before doing the same thing. Rusty
said it was a bad lot of bushings and sent a third set.
Last weekend, my friend had custom LCA's made that will use the stock rubber
bushings. He's returning the LCA's from his lift kit back to Rusty.
Unfortunately, it looks like there might something inherently wrong with the
Rusty set-up, although we couldn't tell what was causing the bushings to get
chewed up so fast. Must be a sharp edge that chops them up during flex.
Sorry I don't have a happy answer for you, but don't put too much faith in
the replacement bushings solving the problem. Anyone else have actual
experience with a Rusty's XJ lift where everything is working OK???
Kris, e-mail me if you want more info on the custom LCA's. I don't know
what this guy would want for another set, but they are very nice, well
designed and ride awesome with the rubber bushings. Or just return yours to
Rusty and buy Tomken's LCA's :^)
