Earlier XJs (like my '89) just use a bolt and nut - no tapered fitting.
I don't know when they changed those, probably with the 96-97 changes.

Yes you will need the following tools.

Calipers
Mag base
Dial indicator
7/16 drill bit
3/8 pipe tap
Torque wrench

And the know how to setup the backlash on your gears.

Is it difficult to install an ARB Locker in a Ford 8.8? Mostly I am
asking if I am going to need any special tools to do this?

And the thing Sharky would like about a 9" is the ring gear bolts are 9/16"

the 8.8 has 10.

Brandon,

I did the 8.8 swap into my 87 YJ back in Feb of this year. Absolutely LOVE
the upgrade! I don't know much about the 9", but some of the definite
positives of the 8.8 are:

1. Strength. It has 31 spline, 1.35" axle shafts, 3.25" OD tubes, and ring
gear is only .2" smaller than the 9". 2. Disk Brakes. Come stock on the
95/up Exploder axles. Adding disks to an axle pre-equipped with drums seems
to be darn expensive. Problem is that you may need to swap a combination
valve and master cylinder to get optimal performance from the disks. I have
not done this on mine yet. The brake pedal is really mushy, but they stop,
so I've been letting it slide.
3. Ease of install. 8.8 axle is only an inch narrower than the D35, which
isn't even noticeable. The bolt pattern is the same as the D35, so wheels
bolt right on. Depending on how complete your 8.8 is when you get it,
welding on spring perches might be the most complicated part of the install.
4. Cost. I know you can get junkyard axles for less, but I ordered a brand
new 8.8 from Ariel Perfomance in Oklahoma. They have several new axles from
Fords overstock, so these have never been under a vehicle before. They're
complete from caliper to caliper (but you need to run your own brakelines).
The open, 3.54 geared version runs $425 plus shipping. Since I knew I was
going to regear and lock it up, thats the way I went. BTW,the Detroit cost
more than the damn axle ($520)!

If you go to www.jeepaholics.com and search the tech section for 8.8 info,
you should find a semi-write up (w/ pictures) of my install.

All told, I put about $1400 into my 8.8 swap. All but $150 of that was just
parts, with the big hitters being, oviously, the axle, the locker and the
gears. I did all the install work myself. The $150 was for labor to
install and set-up the new gears and locker.

As for gears, what tranny you run? I run an auto with 33" tires and went
with 4.10's. If I had a 5spd, I might have geared lower, 4.56's probably.
Although, like you, I already had 4.10's in the front, so I may not have
wanted to spend the money to regear 2 axles and just stuck with the 4.10's.

Feel free to ask me anything else and good luck!

Tom

ps. NO! You can't re-use your D35 gears in the new axle. What kinda
question is that?!?!? ;-)

need to know if I can use my 4.10 gears out of the dana 35 in the 8.8

I am going to have my parents do this then I need HELP. I am kinda

I have three gear jobs to do this weekend and will be on vacation the next

If Sharky was not going to wider width axles he would have done an
8.8. I don't see enough extra strength in the 9" over the 8.8 to
warrant going to it unless you plan on being on H2H or Anaconda
everyday, even then the 8.8 would hold up. The extra cost of the
different bolt pattern, width, etc... increases the costs so much
that unless you are going full width it is not worth it in my
opinion to do a 9".

Subject: Were to pull power (electric) on a ZJ

I'm looking for a power source on my 95 ZJ that meets the
following criteria:

1) Under the hood

2) Preferable hot only while running but at a minimum it has to be
switched; in other words it cannot be live all the time because it
is going to feed an electrical fan.

3) 30 to 40 amps

All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks. - Jose

Brandon,

I did the 8.8 swap into my 87 YJ back in Feb of this year. Absolutely
LOVE
the upgrade! I don't know much about the 9", but some of the definite
positives of the 8.8 are:

1. Strength. It has 31 spline, 1.35" axle shafts, 3.25" OD tubes, and
ring
gear is only .2" smaller than the 9". 2. Disk Brakes. Come stock on
the
95/up Exploder axles. Adding disks to an axle pre-equipped with drums
seems
to be darn expensive. Problem is that you may need to swap a
combination
valve and master cylinder to get optimal performance from the disks. I
have
not done this on mine yet. The brake pedal is really mushy, but they
stop,
so I've been letting it slide.
3. Ease of install. 8.8 axle is only an inch narrower than the D35,
which
isn't even noticeable. The bolt pattern is the same as the D35, so
wheels
bolt right on. Depending on how complete your 8.8 is when you get it,
welding on spring perches might be the most complicated part of the
install.
4. Cost. I know you can get junkyard axles for less, but I ordered a
brand
new 8.8 from Ariel Perfomance in Oklahoma. They have several new axles
from
Fords overstock, so these have never been under a vehicle before.
They're
complete from caliper to caliper (but you need to run your own
brakelines).
The open, 3.54 geared version runs $425 plus shipping. Since I knew I
was
going to regear and lock it up, thats the way I went. BTW,the Detroit
cost
more than the damn axle ($520)!

If you go to www.jeepaholics.com and search the tech section for 8.8
info,
you should find a semi-write up (w/ pictures) of my install.

All told, I put about $1400 into my 8.8 swap. All but $150 of that was
just
parts, with the big hitters being, oviously, the axle, the locker and
the
gears. I did all the install work myself. The $150 was for labor to
install and set-up the new gears and locker.

As for gears, what tranny you run? I run an auto with 33" tires and
went
with 4.10's. If I had a 5spd, I might have geared lower, 4.56's
probably.
Although, like you, I already had 4.10's in the front, so I may not have
wanted to spend the money to regear 2 axles and just stuck with the
4.10's.

Feel free to ask me anything else and good luck!

Tom

ps. NO! You can't re-use your D35 gears in the new axle. What kinda

Sure it's a possibility but definitely not a weakness that I have ever heard
of in the Jeep community. Tires bigger than 37's don't belong on an 8.8 and
tires over 31" shouldn't be put on a D35. In my opinion your comparison
(35's on D35) is like putting 42s on an 88. Doh! I'm not arguing whether or
not the 9" is stronger. That would be ridiculous. Just stating that the 8.8
is a great axle for running up to 37's and up to that size the ring gear
bolt size just wouldn't be an issue. A 9" can run up to 40 spline shafts
with mods. It could handle those 42's. At that point I think your argument
would be more valid.

If you are really worried about strength come and look at the AAM 11.5 rear
end under my Duramax. It's equivalent to a Dana 80 with it's 1.60" shafts &
11.5" ring gear. Plus it's already got disc brakes. It makes those "puny"
D60's and 14 bolts look like popsicle sticks. <Grin>

Anyway, I look forward to hanging out with you tonight even if we disagree.
I better go buy some cold ones, LOL.

you can get an 8.8 out of an explorer but what about the 9". I also
need to know if I can use my 4.10 gears out of the dana 35 in the 8.8
or 9", and if I cant what gears go well in these axle pushing 33"
tires. One person sugested 4.11 and another suggested 4.56. Is 4.11
better or worse than 4.10s? I know this is a lot of questions but if
I am going to have my parents do this then I need HELP. I am kinda
clueless right now. Any suggestions, input or ideas would be
welcome.

Brandon

Exactly why the 2 axles are meant for different types of uses. Nothing wrong
with the c-clips as long as the shafts are strong enough for your particular
use.

You used to like the 8.8 until you found the 9" for your Jeep. (I can't wait
to stick that 9" POS in the back of my truck this weekend for you). Hmm, I
wonder why the newfound bias? <grin>

All in fun.....

I know some also fear C-clips. The 8.8 is a C-clip axel.

Just to though my 2 cents in here. The 9" can be built much stronger then
the 8.8. You can get massive 35 spline and even 40 spine axel shafts for the
9". The other advantages are the 9" is a third member and the diff housing
is steal so it is much easer to weld to for other customizing.

Of course I am a bit partial to the 9" as that is what I run with 1.5" 35
spline axel shafts and a Curry high pinion third member.

True, but I have heard of ring bolt shearing off on D35s with 35" tires. So
relatively it would be a possibility with larger tires on an 8.8. don't you
think?

Yeah, but when was the last time you ever heard of anybody shearing off the

And the thing Sharky would like about a 9" is the ring gear bolts are 9/16"
instead of the 7/16" on the 8.8 and there are 12 of them on the 9" where as
the 8.8 has 10.

Subject: [az_vjc] Re: YJ rear axle swap ?

What kinda
question is that?!?!? ;-)

Hello all

Things are actually starting to look up after the fire last Monday.
We moved into the temporary (6 months or so) house on Friday.....if
you can call carrying 2 K-Mart bags full of new clothes "moving."
The cause and orgin guy from State Farm has cleared the house for
removal of salvagable items and the adjusters have finished sifting
ashes to find the destroyed items. The first building permit for the
reconstruction was issued Friday morning.

A big thank you to everyone who has sent messages and offers of
help - you have no idea how much it means to us.

This weekend I'm going to start clearing out the garage and RV yard
so that the demolition crew can begin tearing things down next week.
If anyone has some extra time and would like some exercise along
with free pizza and beer (the usual payment <grin> ), I could use
some help moving the woodpile, the CJ frame and tub, and the Dana
44's in the side yard. They aren't going far, just spotted along
the back fence to make room for the construction crew. If you feel
like coming over, shoot me an email at either lsulliv@c... or
kermitj10@y... or give me a call on my cell phone for directions.
The cell number is 480-235-4387.

Again, thanks to all who sent condolences.

I think if you shear off a bolt in an 8.8 you might be doing
something that might have done it on the 9". I agree the extra
bolts help spread the force, but that 8.8 is pretty darn stout. A
D35c is weak as they come, the 8.8 is stock more than a built D35
could ever be.

Randy,

I would agree if you are going all out. The origin of the question
came from some one who is going to have this given to him as a
present for his birthday. I am figuring some cost is a factor in
this. For the cost of cutting down a 9" rear, setting it up,
changing the bolt pattern for the tires you could build an 8.8, re-
gear the front and rear for the larger tires and at least one
locker. The 9" would be getting done for the same ratio as the
front. Much more bang for the buck going the 8.8 route. Now if
this person was going full width front and rear and has that kind of
cash flow I would suggest the 9" or better yet D60's.

I just do this stuff on the side not really interested in advertising as I
get more then enough business by word of mouth. I have installed the very
first production versions. We had to wait for them to be manufactured by
Superior. Call them if you are interested. The super 30 ARB install went
very smooth but the super 35 ARB was not as smooth. There tolerance on the
center pin to the axel ends is very tight and needs to be loosed up by about
.010". Typical stuff when you are do the first of a kind.

ARB makes an air locker for the Super 30 & 35 now? WOW, when did
that start doing that? What is the p/n? I have never seen it in
their catalogue: http://www.arbusa.com/alac/usa/215110.pdf

BTW - If you are going to advertise your services, for hire, you
might want to do it in a personal email. Simon (at 4 Wheelers) and
some of the others can't get away with it, so why should you?
