Last time I went through upper (month or so ago) there was a HUGE
boulder right at the turn before the waterfall. I was with 3 over
lifted, locked, well built jeeps and we had to rearrange about 30
rocks to get over it; I also had to get winched off after my first
attempt.

Needless to say if I was only with one other jeep, I wouldn't have
attempted it.

Someone has probably gone through since then and can comment....

Well - I tend to agree...35's would be better. I've done it w/ 33's
(locked), but like the girl says...bigger is better.

Things have certainly evolved, though. It wasn't all that long ago where the
biggest baddest tire was a 33, and these trails were done with them. Still
are, but you have to be willing to accept the collateral.

Peace,

Doug

Obviously some of us are not "EXTREME" enough for you. I used to enjoy wheeling with you. It's probably better that some of you choose to segregate yourselves. Those of us not worthy of those parties presence anymore will just have to tough it out with the great bunch of people that make up the AZVJC.

I have belonged to a number of groups much like this one that get the joy of
dealing with car dealerships when it comes to getting a vehicle repaired
under warranty. I don't know if Arizona has the same customer protection
laws as Nevada but there the dealer has to prove that whatever mods you made
to the car caused the part to break. It sounds like thats exactly what you
did so good job!!

Don't worry Eric, you can run just Lower and not Upper if you want. The exit
trail that runs beside the Ajax trail cuts right through where Lower Ajax
becomes Upper Ajax so there is an easy out. Lower Ajax is fun.

for a TJ to run 35s, 4.56, 4 to 1, Detroit...with a 4 banger.

I've got a good lead on one out of a newer style exploder (only drums
though) that just needs a new pass. axle shaft.

For those with 8.8 experience, I have read that 96+ have discs and 31
splines. However my parents have a 96 (and this one looks
identical); but this particular explorer only has drums (I haven't
opened it to check the spline count, I'm not sure if the guy will let
me or not).

Is the 28 spline really that much weaker than the 31 spline, or can
you upgrade them to 31 spline?

I have no plans for a motor swap.

I know it will need new brackets, gears, bearings, and a yoke
adaptor. But I've read that some people have had to modify the e-
brake cable.

I'll be putting a SYE/DS in at the same time so will get the correct
driveshaft yoke and adaptor.

I know you big guns will say go for the 9" or a D60 for the strength
and being non c-clip, but the prices are insane....and do I really
need that much axle for a 4 banger based on a cost to strength ratio
and only running 36" tire max? (I currently have a D35C so anything
is really a big step up.)

I've done the research and am confident in knowing what it will take
to get it under the jeep…..but my point is I can get the rear end for
really, really cheap compared to what they usually run, and I would
have to build one up with the right gears, locker etc anyways.

Opinions, thoughts, concerns?

Ross,

Consider this a peace agreement

I think I need to relax. These damn inlaws are getting under my skin. Wish me luck as I'm approaching 8 weeks and counting down to the big wedding day Oct 6th. And despite the economic slowdown and computer companies laying people off, somebody forgot to inform my clients that they aren't supposed to call as much. It's absolutely crazy lately.

To keep you up to date on whats been happening lately...I'm getting a new higher clearance gas skid from Kilby for the low hanging, speed bump dragging TJ. New Mastercraft Racing Seats to make it even more comfy are being shipped this week. You can feel free to call me a weenie anytime, but I'm the most comfortable weenie you've ever met on the trail Oh yeah, and the other weenie Joe W is getting them too If your real good I'll let you sit in one of them.

Ahhhh, those relaxing kava kava herbs are starting to kick in....

I'm glad to hear you came out a winner. I too purchased an extended warranty on my TJ. I haven't yet passed the factory 3/36 warranty yet and often wonder how much trouble I'll get if I ever need to make a claim on my Chrysler 7/70 warranty. In the fine print it excludes hard offroad use. I wonder what they'll think of my rig when I pull in needing a new tranny. They can't seriously expect me believe that my Teralow, 35's, gears, and lockers ruined it. It must have been the hand throttle bolted to the shifter that ruined it

I have done Upper Ajax a few times, all with 33's. The first two times only with a rear locker. It was a challenge but fun, and some body damage. The last time was with front and rear lockers and a 4 to 1, This made it just another trail. I don't think that anything bigger than a 33 is needed but front and rear lockers is a very good idea. Just my opinion.

Also I have heard that a large rock has fell into the trail as the trail turns right at the base of the main water fall and has made the trail harder. I have not been out there to see it for myself.

It's a very strong 4 to a 4.5. 33's and traction devices (f&r) as a minimum, IMO. There will likely be water in it, so it'll be more challenging than normal.

Lower Ajax wash crosses and continues along portions of the road to the Ajax Mine. It is the typical "wash;" for the most part you cross over and around the rock obstacles. There are a few 2 - 4 ft. waterfalls or narrow rock areas to find your way over or through but there are several by-passes. The wash is set among the rolling hills below the Ajax Mine.

This trail is fun and a challenge for the moderate 4-wheeler, although this trail is not for the inexperienced driver nor a stock vehicle.

A rear Traction Device, and 31" + tires are required..

LOL.......It's called a "proof of concept" sweetheart. And what do you mean
that the parts I want to hang on the J-10 won't fit the CJ-5? A lot of
stuff interchanges between the two........they use the same gas, the same

Actually, if (oops, I meant when....yeah, that's it, when) we get the Chevy
350 into the CJ-5 the York compressor brackets we came up with for the
Chevy small block WILL interchange between the two........so there.
Research.

Love you sweetie.

Just a warning to those considering upper Ajax.
I was with Dan C and the others on upper ajax soon after the bolder
fell.
In my opinion the trail went from a fun and challenging to very
technical in the area of the boulder.

I'll never forget hearing the words "thats new" spoken solmeny on
the CB from Dan as he rounded the corner into the area of the bolder.

Anyway, my point being, Agreeing with Ross, Unless someone has blown
this thing up, or stacked so many rocks that its just another speed
bump. I would not recommend this trail without at least 33's & front
& rear lockers & MOST IMPORTANT: EXPERIANCE WITH TECHINICAL ROCK
CRAWLING & A EXCELLENT SPOTTER. It would be real easy to go sliding
off the top of this thing. Hopefully someone will go that has done
the trail since the rock fell.

I'm not trying to say that this rock is the most difficult obstical
in the world, It's actually pretty cool & adds a great new twist to
this trail. I would really hate to see it altered so anything less
then a very built rig can make it.

I really wish I could go with you all. Gotta go out of town.

3.5" lift, 33" tires, no lockers. Upper Ajax gave him fits and yes there was
plenty of water because it rained on us all day. It was a lot of fun. I
attached a pic. of that TJ in a crack. We shredded one of his bran new BFGs

This is what I mean. A 4-4.5 is not a non-locked less then 33" kind of
trail. Sure, you can slam up it but with the number of riggs nowadays that
is not okay anymore. Trust me, I know what its like to want to do those
trails and did it. There were also 12 people in AZVJC and I was locked with
33"s.
Wet is even worse. Then being open with no clearence means you really tear
things up.

Guys
Get locked at one end or the other. If you go on a 4+ trail make sure
someone who has been around is along to spot and help out. 33 BFG's are
great tires and when it comes to traction I think they hold better then my
38.5 TSL/SX's (except when they are at 2lbs)
If you are waiting to upgrade axels, buy a cheap locker until you do.

I ran both Upper and lower Ajax earlier this year with a guy that had a
TJ,
3.5" lift, 33" tires, no lockers. Upper Ajax gave him fits and yes there
was
plenty of water because it rained on us all day. It was a lot of fun. I
attached a pic. of that TJ in a crack. We shredded one of his bran new
BFGs
in this picture.

This is what I mean. A 4-4.5 is not a non-locked less then 33" kind of
trail. Sure, you can slam up it but with the number of riggs nowadays
that
is not okay anymore. Trust me, I know what its like to want to do those
trails and did it. There were also 12 people in AZVJC and I was locked
with
33"s.
Wet is even worse. Then being open with no clearence means you really
tear
things up.

It's a very strong 4 to a 4.5. 33's and traction devices (f&r) as a
minimum, IMO. There will likely be water in it, so it'll be more
challenging than normal.

What equipment is recommended for upper Ajax?
I have an XJ with 5" lift 32" MT's & a healthy track lock.

Just a note to all. Upper Ajax is a 4.5, but there's an easy out for
those that might not want to do upper.

Hello All,

Mike Baney is leading an Ajax (Lower) trail run on Friday, August 10,
2001.

When: Meet at 7:00 PM at the Texaco in FJ.
Where: We will run lower ajax first, then on to upper ajax.
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 4 hours?
CB Channel: 4

Lower Ajax wash crosses and continues along portions of the road to the
Ajax Mine. It is the typical "wash;" for the most part you cross over
and around the rock obstacles. There are a few 2 - 4 ft. waterfalls or
narrow rock areas to find your way over or through but there are several
by-passes. The wash is set among the rolling hills below the Ajax Mine.

This trail is fun and a challenge for the moderate 4-wheeler, although
this trail is not for the inexperienced driver nor a stock vehicle.

A rear Traction Device, and 31" + tires are required..

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
